Mud glorious mud!

And what a muddy weekend it was at the Dorset County Show in September.

DA21 were offered the opportunity to exhibit at the show and we did this by running a Sustainable Living marquee. Right from the start of the set – up on Friday we were battling the mud and on two occasions the van got stuck and we had to wait to be towed out, all part of the fun.

On the Saturday of the show the marquee was open to Dorset based community groups to promote what is happening in Dorset at grass roots level. Groups that attended included the Dorset Climate Change Coalition, P.E.A.T, Dorset Cycle Network, W.E.A.G with their wonderful eco-house.

Henry Brackenbury with the Weymouth Environmental Action Groups eco-house.

Sunday saw companies and groups exhibiting together, all which support sustainable living. The mud was thicker and deeper by Sunday but people continued to come to the show and the da21 marquee. Approximately 50 people committed to reduce their carbon footprint through the Dorset Climate Change Coalition and D.E.A.C stands and da21 gained new members and raffled a mountain bike. The bike was won by the Dorset Cycle Network and will be in use around the county.

On the Saturday afternoon da21 held the Annual General Meeting, and again despite the weather it was well attended. Chris Church gave an inspirational talk that sent a buzz around the marquee and we enjoyed food and drink together. We welcome two new trustees to da21 - Sylvia Barker and Dominic Murphy. Sylvia has been an active da21 member for 2 years, and has a background working with a wide range of organisations and individuals throughout the UK in both the public and private sector and direct experience within both a large and a small charity, including funding, marketing, advice and information, and training issues. Dominic is a trained journalist specialising in sustainability, green building, renewable energy and gardening. Having worked for 16 years on national newspapers he now lives and works from Dorset as a writer. And having recently finished a 'green' renovation of their Victorian home also has practical experience and knowledge.

Da21 extends many thanks to Perry’s Recycling who where the main sponsors and to everyone who took part for making the weekend possible.

Next year we plan a bigger and better Sustainable Living marquee and lots of sunshine. If you or your organisation would like to be involved please contact the da21 office.
